Until recently, I have had a tremendous amount of shame about the bullying I experienced as a child.
Whenever something would happen and my mother would find out, she would yell at me and say, “Why didn’t you fight back?! What are you doing to make them treat you like that?”

Think terms such as “fag” and “that’s so gay” are not being commonly used anymore? Think again.
In fact, a recent study by GLSEN, the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students, found that over half of students reported hearing homophobic remarks often—8 out of 10 LGBT students reported being verbally harassed at school in the last year.
